Brief

With millions of pounds invested in turbine technology at every one of their wind farm sites, the likes of Scottish Power need to know exactly what to expect in terms of weather events from the next few hours to the coming days.

The Met Office approached RMA to partner with them to create a dashboard app that could deliver site-specific forecast information to wind farm operators.

How did we innovate?

Our user experience (UX) specialists were allowed privileged access to the wind farm operations staff to undertake detailed analysis of how they leverage weather data to minimise turbine downtime.

Our concepts focused on allowing operations staff to appreciate and interpret future weather events in a site-specific manner which was previously not possible.

The RMA development team rapidly built and delivered modules of functionality in stages so that operations staff could quickly get the benefit of the new solution.

Outcome

The VisualEyes application saves businesses like Scottish Power considerable amounts of money in unexpected repair or cancelled maintenance.

It dramatically improves their ability to schedule maintenance and take turbines out of action to protect them in unsuitable weather conditions by giving them access to the Met Office’s most detailed data and prediction capabilities.

RMA have worked seamlessly with the customer facing team to ensure a full and positive engagement with Scottish Power Renewables (SPR) for the VisualEyes dashboard project. Their professionalism and insight when gathering customer requirements, story-boarding, and creating generic user profiles and wireframes has been exemplary. Their ability to work alongside the Met Office complexities with regard to the delivery of weather data has been very well received. This highly structured activity has resulted in the winning of SPR as a customer for the Metoffice VisualEyes product in the face of stiff competition and adverse market conditions and has therefore added great value to the Met Office. The project as a whole has been run and managed clearly with excellent communications and is set to deliver a ground breaking level of visualisation, on time and to the fixed price quoted. This project and RMA's skills have also allowed the Met Office to recognise the value inherent in our chosen web delivery tools and future service delivery architecture. All in all an excellent engagement which has been proven to be very much to the Met Office's direct commercial and technological benefit.
